A sedentary lifestyle is turning us into desk potatoes. One in five Britons admits that they barely leave their desk during working hours and the average person walks for only 10 minutes a day against the recommended 30 to 40 minutes. Sitting has become so prevalent that we don’t even question it. Too many sitting days over a prolonged period of time can lower the base metabolic rate because our muscles are not stimulated enough. Standing burns 40% more calories than sitting. Long periods of sitting can also lead to hypertension, high cholesterol and cardiovascular disease. We are just not meant to sit for long…so don’t take it sitting down, take a stand and save your body!
